Shade Sail Installation
Shade Sails are a popular solution for home owners seeking year round protection from California's climate. Although a Shade Sail seems like a relatively simple structure, the installation is a small construction project. Special attention needs to be given to design, engineering, construction techniques, proper materials, HOA rules, city or county zoning, engineering and permit requirements.

Is a permit needed? If there are foundations (footings) or connections to a residential or commercial building; zoning, engineering and a permit will be required. As a licensed contractor, we are required to have these completed prior to any installation we perform. We offer these (fee based) services as part of a turn-key solution for your convenience.

Are estimates free? Yes and no. A free general cost estimate can be provided based on your desired Shade Sail inquiry. However, a design plan, a detailed materials cost description, and a permit inquisition requires a fee.

What is the difference between Pre-made vs. Custom Made Shade Sails?

Not all Pre-made Shade Sails are the same. Jacobs Contracting has been selling Pre-made Shade Sails, Canopy Parts, Shade Nets, and high quality Tarps to do it yourself customers for many years online at Over the years, we've done the research for you and stand behind the products we sell. Custom Made Shade Sails on the other hand, take quality to the next level. When hired to do Shade Sail Installations, Jacobs Contracting will only use the highest quality Custom Made Shade Sails, steel posts, stainless steel tensioning hardware, and installation processes available. Our Custom Made Shade Sails are UV stabilized high density polyethylene (HDPE) shade fabric, using UV stabilized sewing thread, and are made in the USA. Each corner is reinforced using multiple layers of shade cloth including a heavy gauge stainless steel d-ring. A pocket is sewn around the entire perimeter of the Shade Sail to house a tensioning wire rope which is designed to help transfer the tensile load from the corner tensioning device turnbuckles to the center of the sail. Each Custom Shade Sail is made when ordered with 16 color options available.

How is the price determined? Pricing for the materials and installation of a Custom Made Shade Sail is based on the complexity of the design, required permits costs, possible architectural requirements, engineering requirements, shapes, square footage, type, height, location, accessibility, viable anchor points, quantity, and steel pole types. Typical installations include a site plan drawing, a construction permit, steel posts secured in concrete footers, a commercial grade Custom Shade Sail(s) and all related heavy duty stainless steel hardware.
